  • When you store your knives, never store them open in a drawer. Not only do you have a chance of cutting yourself, but this will dull the blades as well as they move around when you open and close it and they scrape against everything else in it. Either store your knives in a bag like I have, in a knife block, or put a plastic protector on the blade and put them in the drawer and make this drawer a place for knives only. You can also put a towel or a rubber mat on the bottom to keep the knives from moving around.
  • Try not to be distracted by others around you when holding a knife. Concentrate on job and take your time.
  • It is good to teach kids how to cook, and depending on age they can use a knife, always use close supervision and let them cut soft fruit and veggies first, something with a soft skin and without a hard seed inside.
  • When someone is going to take over cutting, place the knife on the cutting board and let the other person pick it up. Never hand a knife to someone.
  • Use the right tool for the right job. Knives are not can or package openers. Use a can opener or scissors for that.
  • When washing your knives do not place in a sudsy sink with other dishes. Chances are you are going to reach in the dishwater and cut yourself.
  • When you are walking with a knife, always carry the knife point side down and place it close to your body. You do not want to cut or stab someone else.
  • Never cut towards you or anyone else. You can slip and cut yourself.
